At J.E. Moss Elementary School, students are taught in a creative and inclusive learning community where they can grow and succeed. Students also get their Personalized Learning Time, or PLT, to participate in social and emotional learning activities as well as working on skill sets that enhance their self-knowledge, feelings, gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. The elementary school in Antioch was named after lifelong educator and administrator Jewette E. Moss, who dedicated his career to the development of academic and extracurricular opportunities for children in public schools. Moss, a Chattanooga native, believed youth to be agents of positive change and motivated them to believe in themselves and achieve their goals through hard work and well-honed talent.

J. E. Moss’ faculty and administration ensure that Every Student is Known by providing students with a bi-weekly social-emotional learning (SEL) block on Fridays during PLT. SEL activities are provided for each block during PLT. Activities revolve around self-knowledge, feelings, gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. Themes are reinforced during the SEL block in all classrooms.

“Addressing the social and emotional needs of our students and community is not something we do, it is who we are,” says Carl Febles, executive principal at J.E. Moss.

Facts about J.E. Moss

  • Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) Rewards behavior program will be introduced this year. PBIS is a digital management solution that assists schools in teaching appropriate behavior. This paperless reward program digitizes tokens and helps make it easy to recognize students for acting responsibly. PBIS Rewards also makes the reward/track/redeem process easy to administer.
  • The school’s Food for the Soul program assists in serving 25 families a week. Also, the partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank and The Bridge Ministry provides meals to 100 families each month.
  • Moss is creating a Walking School Bus program for the walkers. This is the first one of its kind in the district and should be up and walking by Spring Break.

Principal Febles believes in J.E. Moss students, faculty, and staff. He ensures that every student knows the elementary school’s creed, which is:

“I came to school today so that success can come my way. I will treat others with respect and on my work, I will do my best. A better world I will one day make, so this Creed I gladly take.”

The creed is recited every day at announcements by the entire school.
