Sustainability Efforts
Metro Nashville Public Schools is committed to promoting environmental stewardship and sustainability in our schools and community. We strive to create a healthier, more ecologically sustainable environment through various innovative projects and educational programs.
Key Initiatives
MNPS Energy Program
Over the past three years, MNPS has focused on reducing energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency through the MNPS Energy program. Key achievements include:
- A 20% annual reduction in energy consumption, equivalent to 260,000 metric tons of carbon emissions reduced.
- Implementation of energy-efficient designs and construction standards, achieving LEED Silver or Gold certification for new buildings and major renovations.
- Installation of Solar Energy Production systems at several schools.
- Use of Geothermal HVAC Systems at various campuses to reduce energy use.
Green Infrastructure Projects
Our commitment to green infrastructure includes:
- A Green Roof at James Lawson High School, contributing to energy savings and providing a unique learning environment for students.
- Pollinator gardens installed at 15 MNPS schools, promoting biodiversity and supporting local ecosystems with the help of the Tennessee Environmental Council (TEC).
Sustainable Learning Environments
MNPS integrates sustainability into the learning experience through:
- Outdoor classrooms and gardens at schools like Westmeade Elementary and Lockeland Design Center, fostering early exposure to sustainability concepts.
- Sustainability-focused classes such as I.B. Environmental Systems and Societies, AP Environmental Science, and general Environmental Science courses.
Collaboration with Environmental Organizations
We partner with local organizations to enhance our sustainability efforts, including:
- Urban Green Lab
- Tennessee Environmental Council
- The Compost Company
These collaborations help us implement effective programs like food redistribution, composting initiatives, and educational workshops for students and staff.
Student Leadership and Engagement
Our students are at the forefront of our sustainability initiatives. We support and encourage student-led efforts to promote climate awareness and sustainability within their schools and the community. This includes:
- Student clubs focused on sustainability.
- Involvement in district-wide and school-specific career fairs to explore green career options.
Electrification of School Buses
Our district has sought out and received federal grants to begin electrifying some of our school buses to promote sustainability by lowering greenhouse gas emissions while saving on fuel costs. The Board approved the purchase of 15 buses expected to arrive in late 2025. This pilot program will provide useful information to the district on how we can further electrify our fleet while ensuring stable transportation options for students.
Future Goals
Looking ahead, MNPS aims to:
- Further reduce the district’s carbon footprint through continued energy conservation and green building practices.
- Expand sustainability concepts in the curriculum and advocate for their inclusion in state standards.
- Increase efforts to reduce food waste and enhance recycling programs across all schools.
