Situated in a residential area near Nashville International Airport, Glengarry Elementary is a small neighborhood school whose staff is committed to helping each student live up to the school’s motto, “Soaring Above the Rest.”  student in cap and gown, rainbow background

Glengarry is fulfilling Metro Schools’ focus on Every Student Known by making it a priority for every member of the school’s staff to know each student both academically and personally by understanding their unique interests, personalities and needs. Glengarry’s staff includes not just high-quality teachers but also a school counselor, an advocacy center coach, English Learner co-teachers and caring support staff.

“All students deserve to not only be known but also to have a nurturing learning environment where they can excel academically, socially and emotionally,” said Glengarry Principal Leslie Gordon. “Our front door says, ‘If you’re not prepared to put students first, turn around.’ Everyone at Glengarry puts students first!”

Examples of how school staff offer instruction and programs for each student:

  • Approximately 75% of Glengarry’s students are English Learners. Glengarry is well-equipped to provide them with the support and resources they need as they learn English. Roughly 75% of Glengarry’s classroom teachers are EL-certified, and the school has EL co-teachers in grades 1-4 as well as other EL-certified related arts teachers, interventionists, instructional coaches and administrators.
  • Daily Personalized Learning Time is meticulously planned by teachers to meet the specific needs of each student in both reading and math.
  • Glengarry is an SEL (social-emotional learning) Foundations school, which means staff and students use the SEL process to recognize and manage emotions, demonstrate care and concern for others, develop positive relationships, make good decisions, and behave ethically, responsibly and respectfully.

Partnerships with Boys and Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee and MNPS’s Community Achieves division provide after-school programs, a coding club for third- and fourth-graders, and a counselor who works with families as well as students to address barriers to success.  three teachers and student in front of whiteboard

Knowing that even a few absences can have long-term negative consequences affecting student success, Glengarry has a much-coveted traveling trophy awarded weekly to the classroom with the highest percentage of students with perfect attendance. Twice monthly, the school celebrates students who have shown exceptional effort with the Eagle Effort Awards; students receive a certificate and have their work featured in the front hallway.

Facts about Glengarry

  • The school opened in the fall of 1962, originally serving students in first through sixth grades. Today it serves 355 students in Pre-K through fourth grade. It is named for the subdivision where the school is located.
  • The Glengarry mascot is the Eagle, and the school colors are blue and white.
