Maplewood High School

Maplewood High School takes pride in its long tradition of providing quality education in Nashville. It opened to the community in 1962 and was known as the “Home of the Mighty Panthers.” The school’s nickname today is “Panther Nation.” Maplewood High School

Throughout the years, Maplewood has greatly contributed to its community with rigorous academic and athletic programming leading graduates to competitive college and career opportunities.

In 1978, the Metro Nashville Board of Public Education approved Maplewood for a vocational addition to provide students with intensive programs focused on workforce industries of high demand and high wages, which eventually led to students sitting for nationally recognized credential opportunities and a chance to obtain early college credits.

Maplewood is continuously bringing into fruition its vision statement to “Educate the whole child to be college & career ready, while creating multiple pathways of opportunities for a lifetime of success” in various ways. The school is home to the Freshman Academy and two career academies: Health & Electrical Sciences and Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

With the focus on developing the “Whole Child,” Maplewood prioritizes student success but ensures that every student is given the social and emotional supports to becoming a lifelong learner and exhibit Panther Excellence. This is particularly reflected in the school’s Panther’s P.R.I.D.E program, which stands for Personal Responsibility In Developing Every student. Maplewood band member

Maplewood practices Every Student Known in multiple ways, including:

  • Workday “Whole Child” Wednesday: It is the expectation that each student enrolled at Maplewood belong to a club or group they feel most comfortable with. This allows students to enjoy the break in the academic curriculum and helps teachers and partners develop relationships with student participants.
  • College & Career Readiness Team: Academy teams, in addition to the College & Career Readiness team, connect with students semi-annually to review goals for college, career, or military service. This plan is built upon yearly to aid students in the decision-making process, but it also provides resources both in school and through partnerships of the academies.
  • Emphasis in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL): Academy teams embed SEL 5 Competencies within lessons while using a restorative approach to support the whole child. This initiative ensures that every student is served with layered interventions to further enhance their educational experience.
