Located in west Nashville, Cockrill Elementary School has deep, historic roots in the city – including ties to the first schoolteacher in Middle Tennessee, Ann Robertson Cockrill; the sister of one of Nashville’s founders, James Robertson; and the mother of Mark S. Cockrill, a farmer whom the school is named after. Cockrill Elementary classroom

Cockrill opened in 1940 and currently serves more than 330 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade in the Nations neighborhood.

Students are taught that “all cougars are capable of greatness,” and the staff works together on one guiding mission: to provide positive encouragement, guidance, and support for all students to reach their highest potential.

Teachers work and plan together in intentional structures to provide individualized support for every student. The entire school’s staff is focused on building meaningful relationships with students as part of the Every Student Known focus.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to serve such an awesome school community,” said Carlos Comer, principal at Cockrill. “We are definitely ‘on the move’ at Cockrill Elementary School!”

Cockrill is an open enrollment school that offers bus transportation and before- and after-care.

The 2021-22 school year is the first year Cockrill has welcomed fifth-grade students. Fifth graders can participate in clubs and activities like computer coding, robotics, and yoga.
