Metro Schools have opportunities for students to enjoy and learn from academic programs, supports, and extracurricular activities in locations that span the city. student at the microphone

The staff across our school buildings ensure every student is personally known and supported – from monitoring academic and social-emotional data to learning students’ interests, needs and learning styles.

With a wide range of programs and opportunities, paired with strong, standards-based academics, Metro Schools has something to fit every family.

Metro Schools families can choose for their student to attend their neighborhood school or zoned school, or participate in the optional schools process to attend an out-of-zone school.

The optional schools window is Jan. 24-Feb. 11. During the application window, families can submit online applications to the more than 100 schools on the optional schools list.

Before You Apply

  • Consider transportation: In most cases, school bus transportation is not provided to out-of-zone students attending optional schools. Public bus transportation through WeGo Public Transit is provided at no cost to all high school students through the StrIDe program, where student ID cards double as city bus passes. Learn more about student transportation.
  • Check to see if the school has academic or audition requirements for admission.
  • Gather required documents:
    • The parent/guardian must be a Davidson County resident before submitting an Optional Schools Application for his/her child.
    • An MNPS-issued student identification (ID) number is required. Families can apply for a student ID number online through our school registration portal.
    • Student ID numbers may also be acquired at any of the district’s eight enrollment centers.
    • The parent/guardian must have a valid email address or phone number to submit an application.
  • Review the school options Frequently Asked Questions page to find out more about sibling preference, pathways, the selection process and more.
  • And, most importantly, research your school options. Check out the school’s website, call to see if opportunities for after-school tours are available or visit their social media channels.

Explore Your Neighborhood School

If it has been a while since you visited your zoned neighborhood school, or a nearby MNPS optional school, visit the Find My School page to explore options.

Kindergarten and Pre-K

Kindergarten families who are choosing an out-of-zone school must use this process but also register for school starting Feb. 14. The Pre-K application period is March 1 to 31.
