Your School Options

  • Schools in Zone and School Options

MNPS, as a default, will assign children to schools based on zones. This means that the school your child is automatically assigned to depends entirely on your address.

However, if you would prefer your child attend a different school than the one corresponding to your zone, you have the option to fill out an application (we call these "optional applications") and apply to another school of your choice. Your eligibility to apply to schools outside your zone depends upon the space available in those schools, and transportation is the responsibility of the family. Families also may apply to one of several charter schools.

    Learn more about School Options.

  • Zoned Option Schools

Some families have a choice between two different zoned schools.

These zoned option schools provide students living in neighborhoods that are primarily low-income and racially isolated the opportunity to attend a more diverse school outside of their neighborhood. Students who are eligible for a zoned option essentially have two zoned schools:

    • Students may choose to enroll in their zoned school, which is typically closer to their home, or
    • Enroll in a zoned option school

Both of the school choices are guaranteed options that come with school bus transportation, just as their zoned school does. Eligible families must complete the Zoned Option Form provided by an enrollment specialist at the time of registration. Zoned option information is found at the bottom of this page.

The following section offers information on how to apply for an ID Online, which is required before applying for Pre-K or an optional school. There is also a list of required documents and enrollment and application packets you can download.
