Call-outs, Closures, and Dismissal Information

Because inclement weather always is a possibility during the winter months, we offer this informational page to let students, families, and staff know how, and where, information on school closures or delays will be announced.

The decision to call an inclement weather delay, or close school, because of weather is rooted in the safety of all our students and staff.

How a Decision to Delay or Close Schools is Made

Making a decision to delay school start times or close schools on an inclement weather day is based on information provided to the district leadership team by staff who evaluate information from many different public agencies, as well as reports received from MNPS employees who evaluate travel conditions throughout Davidson County.

It is important to note that hazardous or icy conditions may affect transportation options in parts of our large county that may not be apparent in other areas.

Our team's intent is to notify families by at least 5:30 a.m. of school delays or closures based on the information available to us at the time of a decision.

Notifications

Telephone Calls

In case of school start delays or closures, families will be notified via a telephone call to the primary phone number listed with their student's school.

A Note about the Telephone Call-Outs:

We serve more than 80,000 students and our call-out system cannot call all our families at the same time. The notification may take a few minutes after the notification is sent to reach your family. For that reason, we also post to the website and to our social media accounts as soon as we know schools will delay their opening bell or will close for the day.

Online and @MetroSchools Social Media
  • Check this website for the alert banner that will be added to the top of all website pages in the event of an inclement weather schedule change.
  • Check for announcements on @MetroSchools social media accounts:
Local Media

Look for information on all four major television stations that serve the Davidson County area. Local online news organizations often post the information as well.

Transportation

Metro School Bus Riders

If schools are delayed, MNPS buses will operate on the delayed schedule. The call-out and social media posts will let you know how long the delay is.

Example: If schools will open two hours late, and a bus is normally scheduled to pick up a student at 7:05 a.m., the delayed pickup time would be 9:05 a.m.

MTA WeGo Riders

Students who use public transportation should visit the MTA WeGo website for route updates and schedule.

Before- and After-Care Schedule

Before- and after-care programs follow the school district's schedule when there are delays or closures.

One-Hour Late Start
  • Before-care programs open one hour late
  • No change for after-school and after-care programs
Two-Hour Late Start

School Closure

After-School Activities and Sports

If school is canceled due to weather, all after-school activities are canceled as well, including sports practice, games, performances, parent meetings, etc. The only exception is TSSAA playoff games, over which MNPS has no jurisdiction.

Inclement Weather Childcare

In the event we are out of school for weather, several school sites will have inclement weather childcare from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. as long as it is safe for their staff to drive.
